Site design changes

As you have already noticed I made changes to the way contests are displayed on the front page and on contest pages. It may look unusual this way, but I think it's more clear for the first time visitors that we have contests and not just news articles. Several of the people whom I showed the site at first thought that the site is just one long page of news articles.

You may also notice that on the front page only the most recent contest show the news stories, but the rest are shown in "reduced form". I've cut down the number of contests displayed on the front page too, so the page is shoter and loads faster.

Your feedback is kindly appreciated.

POLL: Overall, how would you evaluate the site design changes?

I like it. I've always felt the site needs to develop it's own identity more and I think with the growing user base we definitely are. keep up the good work.

One thing - and you may not want to take this too seriously coming from the eyes of a colourblind guy - btu does that baby blue colour fit with the rest of the site?

Well, I tried our FN reddish color, but it it looked too much of a mixed chaos of stripes and structure was hard to see. Nothing is set in stone - I'll try alternative colors.

well in that case I think you should try something new and have the site entirely as a stereogram!

OK, I changed the colors to match the site color theme. Is it better than baby-blue? I think I like it better this way too...

Just some thoughts:

Maybe we need to make an exciting bright little animated icon that says CLICK FOR CONTEST IMAGES! or something like that. I don't think a visitor is truly interested in the "Contest Directions" (like we are), but wants to see the Contest Submissions. So highlighting that might be a bit less burdensome than having the contest directions where they are now. The icon could be small for loading purposes, bright and colorful. Something that will get the users' attention. It could be placed in this order:
[BRIGHT CONTEST ICON] Current Entries 2

I think if we want to keep the Contest Directions the way they are right now in this changed format, maybe it should follow the news story, not lead the news story. I like the saying "fueled by the following news" but I don't know if we should have the news follow the contest.

Also, I'll admit, I'm getting a bit older, and the font size on the news story seems too tiny. Maybe it's just my eyes. Anyone else?

As far as the secondary reddish-brown division bars for contest entries could be a gradient of the FN official red brown. Like a 60-70% of the FN official color.

Just my initial thoughts.

I'm not sure if this is what reg is saying or not, if so, then I agree, but I think it would be better not to have the news story for the contests on the front page, just the directions etc. It gets quite cluttered on the front page otherwise.

Ya...font size is what I noticed straight away
...does seem a tad small.
But then, it may be my eyes also. (because I'm old!)

Points taken and changes made:

1) yellow clickable links added "Click for Image entries"

2) Font size of the news is back to normal

I see your point about news following the guidelines, but it would ruin the whole reason for the initial change - visitors will get confused again and may thing we are simply a news site.
