New Addition to the FAQ

The Freaking News FAQ has been updated in the "What cannot be used in an entry" Section.

It now includes the following listing:

"Collage style entries may be disqualified as inappropriate for a contest. If you feel you have a collage idea which fits a certain contest theme, check with an Administrator before putting hard work into it only to see it disqualified."

Can you be more specific about this "collage/montage"? Isn't montage what photoshop's all about?

Without pointing out any image, A collage/montage is a collection of images, thrown together, usually with a similar theme. Usually very little "photoshop" work goes into them other than basically making 8 layers 50% opacity.

This definitely does not mean you cant use text, and I cant think of any of your chops ray that would be considered under this rule to be unacceptable. Photoshopped presentations such as a lot of your political chops are not what we are looking to avoid with this.

This image: (found NOT on this site) is what we are trying to avoid.

Well, okay, I was just trying to get some precision. It sounds a little like obscenity to me, like it can't be defined precisely, but you know it when you see it. I didn't realize there was a problem with this collage/montage stuff.

Yes, my immediate concern was with the stuff I do, most of which I try to make look real, but only to a point and not necessarily photographically real. I mean you'd probably never really be able to snap one of Bush with his tongue tied around his neck or dodging parachuting coffins or walking across the frozen plains of heII with jet-propelled pigs flying about. But as long as these things qualify as "photorealism," that's fine with me.

I edited this addition to FAQ, and made it much shorter to remove possible confusion (as Ray had).
Left out montage too to avoid confusion. Collage says it all.

Composing an entry consisting mainly of a previously used entry or photoshopped components of a previously used entry may be grounds for disqualification

what this mean? So can i use some parts or layers of previously chopped images for the next competetions

I KNOW I've seen people on this very site using that same bird and house and trees and stuff. I agree, Alan, it's more interesting than most.

Krish, to answer your question: No, you are not supposed to used parts of previous images in new image entries. This is to avoid someone changing one or two little things and entering a new image which the majority of the work had already been done and entered at some previous time.

Your obscenity analogy is spot on And no, we really haven't had an issue with these types of entries save one or two in the past. However, that said, our Apprentice contests are bringing in a lot of new users who may have a tendency to make these types of images so we wanted to get something written in the FAQ to guide them away from it from the get go.

In your reflection what do you see? False fault or a masterpiece? But a masterpiece starts with a single stroke and empires start in an open field.

I thought I understood what was meant by "collage" ; apparently I didn't. Wasn't "Santa Crause" a "collage", even though it didn't recycle previous comp entries ?

The reusing of previous contest entries in an image is nothing new. Unfortunately, the example shown used previously used apprentice themeposts because they were handy for use as an example. The image was just made to show what is considered a collage and has nothing to do with what images can or cannot be used in entries. The topic is 'collage' here.
"Collage style entries may be disqualified as inappropriate for a contest. If you feel you have a collage idea which fits a certain contest theme, check with an Administrator before putting hard work into it only to see it disqualified."
The image, 'Santa Crause', passed the collage test as per the rules.
