Payouts for Comments

Unfortunately we see that abuse of spamming for credits goes on. We
have discussed the negative effects of generic comments
earlier.
But let me quickly summarize it again. Generic comments like "lol/nice
work/neat idea", etc.:
1) Carry almost no meaningful message to the entry author.
2) Cost us a lot of money every month to pay for these comments
3) Cost us even more money because such comments dilute the quality of our content, and drop our advert rates.
4) Cost us lost traffic from search engines and lost new members. Such
comments make our pages resemble joke pages and teen forums for search
engines, and search engines in turn assign low ratings to our content
and push down FN in search results.

We are emailing members and warning them about such generic comments
practice, and will continue this battle.

However many new members seem to like the fact that we pay 5 cents a
comment (1 credit) and enter such generic comments sometimes more than
once per entry. It takes time and admin resources to flag/delete such
comments and deduct credits for them.

So as of August 4, 2006, we will no longer be paying credits for
comments.
We will continue to pay for captions, as long as they are not abused as
comments were.

Please understand that, given the circumstances, it's a necessary step
for site.

If generic comment spamming goes on however, we'll have to cancel
"expandable comments" feature, which many members asked to bring back.

It is very sad that you have to do this Newsy, but I agree. From an artist standpoint, no comments are better than "LOL."

While some people may enter contests just for fun or credits, I think there are a good number of people here who actually enter to improve their skills. Yes it's fun too, but even if you just do it for a hobby, don't you want to improve? Without constructive criticism, how can you?

I would much rather have someone say that they didn’t like my piece, as long as they include why, than to receive rave reviews. “That shadow doesn’t like quite right, maybe feather the edges a bit.” “Those edges are a little rough. If you can clean it up it would improve your score.” Even if time does not permit to change an entry, at least you will know next time.

I never knew ( I must not be paying attention) that we received credits for just leaving comments. I thought credits were handed out just for 'captions'. I just like to give compliments to good entries. Make the person feel like they did a great job. To tell you the truth, I don't think you should pay out for either. I mean, some of these people just type down anything for a caption and most are VERY lame. And for what? A nickle? That's pretty sad if you are that hard up for money. I'd have to leave about 75 comments just to buy a pack of smokes! Hehehe...
Keep up the great work, Newsy.

Lately, if an image isn't almost perfect it gets DQ'd by our very keen jurors! If it needs constructive advice it is unlikely to be around long enough for the person who entered the image to see it.

Yes I am saying this "tongue in cheek" for those who don't understand British humour.

I agree with Newsy that there have been a great many meaningless comments, obviously done to bump up credits.

Catchy captions are a good idea. One thing I have wondered is if they get rated in any way?

i agree with sir newsmaster, But as you said, you already e-mailed some members and given them a warning regarding comments. my only question is, what about the others member/s who are truely putting thier comments on some entries and give some tips or suggestion to help others improve thier work? Do they have to sacrifice just because of others nono comments and just want to buy a cigar?. sorry for questioning your decision but im just asking. please be kind.

I think this is a great move on your part. Sometimes an image really does make me LOL and while it's not necessarily a critique, I want the author to know it hit the funny bone. However, I would never expect to get paid any amount of money for an "LOL." When I first arrived I was trying to reply to everyone, just to be nice, but it's so time consuming! Anyhow, no arguemnts from me (as I'm sure you were awating my approval). Hehe

I agree with Finn. I love getting constructive critiques.
And I don't think we should be paid to leave a comment....or a caption for that matter. If ending the payout for comments is what it takes to stop comment spamming then, great! I do, however, like the expandable comment feature. I would miss that.

This is really a good move from the ADMIN!

For me as a FN member I'm not commenting a lot in every contest just to gain those extra credits.I treat constructive comments seriously and give to those works who really need some improvement. In some contest that I voted I noticed that some members who made those nonsense comment just to say something for gain credits and afterwards his/her work placed way below the ranking.

This think me a lot 'cause "How can you give a constructive comments when your own work needs those comment you give.

The ADMIN did a job well done.

I agree completely unless you are sitting in the top 3 on a regular basis you could use some constructive critism.if your doing it to try to push the votes down then thats bad...it all comes down to "intent"

you can always post that you do not want to be critiqued also!

I totally agree about the whole idea, and I came to this website for the very reason to improve my work...however, now that the comments have been eliminated from the payouts I havn't received any comments, just dorky captions. I appreciate the constructive criticism, and it sucks that people need an incentive to do that, but that's the way the world works. This website wouldn't be running if there were no incentives; sad, but true.

I disagree. I think most of the people here chop images just to chop images and don't chop for the money. Chopping for money is just frosting on the cake. However, the site paying for comments will not be missed by me. I think stopping it will have no effect on the site whatsoever.

I guarentee you those whom have been giving contructive critques are not the same folks who comment for the cash. I see you've only had a couple of entries since cash for comments ended. Give it a little time and i'm sure you will see those whom have been leaving you critiques will continue to do so. What you may notice is a lack of comments such as 'nice', 'neat', and 'lol'.

...as a second thought, don't hesitate to drop in the chatroom, or in the the forums and ask for crituqes before you enter the contest, a second pair of eyes looking over your work will always help your chop and I find this is the easiest way that I've found to improve my chops.

Keep up the good work PcP!

I agree with Keb, getting $ for the top 3 entires is just a bonus.
I chop, therefore, I am. It's great having a place to showcase one's artistic imaginations run amok!
I like the overall competition, and the comaraderie that abounds here at FN. And I don't think that the pay-out changes for the comments will have any effect on the site, or the members that are here for the fun of it. If anything, maybe it'll serve to 'weed out' the ones that have signed up here just to make a 'quick buck'....as it were.
Kudos to the site admins and jurors for working so hard to make this the best darned site on the web. Huzzah!

No, don't get me wrong, I totally agree with you keb and janna... I'm just saying as far as site growth- the incentive for visitors and people (outside us choppers) is the pay-per-comment....so in a business sense more visitors= more sponsors= more contests...so, basically what im just trying to get at is that I know it doesn't effect us who do this for fun, i just hope it doesn't downsize the traffic the site receives and the new members to join...that's all- thanks for the suggestion though midian, i didn't even think to post questions in the forum- later everyone!

I don't think serious choppers give a fig about the money, many of us are addicts, we chop because we love doing it. I was chopping a long time before 1st 2nd and 3rd prizes were introduced. As I am usually either in the middle or bottom end of the ranking, the money side doesn't affect me.

Because of this, I hesitate about giving critiques, unless it is something I know about and can actually help with. So many brilliant choppers have joined this year, the competition is pretty tough. We had brilliant choppers all the way through, now there are more of them.

I looked at FN daily, from the time it started in 2003, but it took me until January 2005 to join and enter.

This site is about so much more than money.

I like faking and chopping images for the sheer fun of it all.
I really don´t need to get paid for them. I have been doing it on other forums for the past 6 years. I never got paid, and I don´t want to get paid. I just do it for the sheer joy and pleasure of seeing my works roaming around the internet.
On some places I even upload them myself from different servers I have. I really like doing this stuff.
But how can I enter the contests if the site doesn´t offer me more credits to keep on posting some of my ideas and "chops"?
