Voting reminder

As our site has had a HUGE influx of new members over the past weeks, I thought maybe it would be appropriate to remind everyone, and possibly inform those whom have not seen the rules on Voting...

Rules on voting/karma directly from our FAQ

I post this because I see a lot of our new users makeing the same mistakes over and over and not gaining karma where they easily could fix a mistake in voting or two and become powerful voting forces ...

The most commone mistake I see is voting 1 or 2 on an entry. NEVER do this. If you think an entry deserves a 1 or a 2, give it a 3, and flag it for quality/off topic/whatever reason you think it deseves that low of a score. If you give an entry a 1 or 2, and for some reason it does not get disqualified, you will lose karma.

The only other thing I can say is be honest, and be fair. Karma will do the rest of the work!

I am wondering if voting members vote images against one another or vote on an entry on it's own merit.

I think it is a good policy to vote on each entry as if it is the only entry in the contest. This takes all the strategy out of voting. Also, view each entry in full view before checking that little box. Some members put a lot of effort into their entries by adding little details that a quick glance will miss.

Look at an image in full view and vote on it. Don't look at 2 or 3 and say, "I like this one better than that one so I'm giving this one a 6 and that one a 5", if they are both 6's. Also, take in to account the theme of the contest, idea and execution, and appeal of the image. It seems many very good images are receiving rather low scores and marginal images are receiving high scores.

Voting fair can raise your karma. That's a good thing. Fair voting on images will help promote the site. We all want the site to be as good as it can be. Fair voting is a major key to attaining that goal.

I hope I'm not in the problem bunch. I've been submitting over at Worth for a few months now and been here almost a month I guess, the scales are practically the same and I feel I have it down pat. Though, if any of the admins feel that I need direction, PLEASE email me. Maybe I'm not a problem, maybe it's the Catholic in me... a guilty conscience is part of the package.

PS, good idea putting the subject on the main page. I am slowly working my way into integrating myself into the community and I don't always read the forums daily.
Also, in the voting scale/karma section it says it "shouldn't take long" for a person to reach 175 Karma. About how long is that? That should give me an idea of my voting skills to date.

If you click on Vote history on the contest page you can see your votes and the votes of everyone else who voted.

It will show you how much karma you have and vote stars for fair voting.

You lose points for not voting on all images and for voting very low, ie: 1 or 2 as explained by Midian.

From what I can see, you are doing just fine. Assuming you vote fairly, and on every entry in a contest, you will earn 3 karma on every contest... to a maximum of 175. may seem like a long way to go, but you will be there before you know it... trust me, time flies when you are brainstorming for more chop ideas

hey guys, i know this is a far/past issue but may i have (stupid/weird) suggestion regarding voting. is it possible to have some changes in voting rules. like when the contest submission is still in active or not yet finish nobody can vote on that time, but the voting will only start after the submission end. so everyone/members will start voting at all same time. and i think thats all fair to everyone. is it possible? because i think the problem their is, why somebody will vote on that earlytime while their just only 5 or 7 entry? and yet thier still lot of time to submit an entry? whether he/she has an entry or none. thanks.

It's not a stupid/weird suggestion, it's been discussed before. Each regular contest has a 48-hour window with 36 hours of submission time, leaving the last 12 for voting only. If we didn't allow voting during the first 36, I think we'd see a drop in voters. Just my opinion!

The code doesn't publish or 'show' entries until voting has started. So if we were to hold off voting, no images would show up.
