Worth's owner JaxomLOTUS said this:
My current plan is to end our last submissions on the midnight changeover of September 29th/ 30th, with the actual site changing to the museum layout a week later, at which point I would turn Worth1000's library of amazing content into a static browsable museum.

Would you buy it now?, The longer it stays closed the cheaper it gets (to a point, then it wouldn't be worth saving)

Avi wouldn't want to JUST sell it even if the price is high. He would only sell it if he is sure the new owner will keep the site going and growing like Avi did when he had the time for it. As he said, a year searching for a right buyer ended up fruitless.

Well, it does have to be profitable unless you're some wealthy person that want's to support these arts and doesn't care about the lack of willing programmers. I know he had it up for sale but if I had the spare $$$; that programmer snag sends up a yellow flag.

Man...I've been out of it for a while. I was gonna start up again and just happened to go to worth 1st and had no idea what the heck was going on.

The site was poorly run, though. I don't have the exact numbers, but I'm positive they have more hits than y'all on a magnitude of at least 4X.

They should have easily been able to turn that into profit.

The "no pay for winning" ethos they took on was their eventual downfall, and it's why you guys and other sites that pay for content are still going strong.

The reason it's closing is because Avi, who owns it, doesn't program in the language the site is written in and he lost his programmer. No other reason. I think it was a marvelous site and I didn't need cash to play there.

i tried to buy worth. when i said that i didn't know programming but had money avi quit the discuaaion quite quickly. i don't think it's about money, but i'll be damned if i do know what it's really about.

yeah, well, if anybody out there still has friends there, you have about eight hours to wrap it up with them.

and regarding it "being poorly run" or whatever, it did have some really bad weeks as of recent bc, although i have no proof of it, somebody hacked in and threw a wrench in the plans.

i guess that happens when you're shutting down anyway. entreprenurial type of thing.

but, yeah, a few people tried buying the site. one person WAS a programmer. i don't know what the deal is.....i'm still upset though.

So, after a year, amongst a sea of people who do photomanipulation as a hobby, this guy was unable to find a single programmer to replace the one he lost?

Um...yeah...well run site...or something.

Hey, I just had a thought - you know what might have helped in finding a new programmer?

money.

hey, i'm not speaking out of line. the guy DID after all make this site. i'm not a fan of the ban hammer, so i'm going to just say that i was willing to give him a lot, but the number that i heard he actually wanted would make you reel.
it truly makes no sense at all.
most of us would have done anything to save the damned thing. anything.

i don't get it either. it's still up. part of me still is deluded enough to think that the whole closing thing is some financial tactic. that the site is not actually going to end forever, and that i'm missing some crucial piece of information.

i'm not defending his actions. mostly bc i don't know what the New Jersey is going on. if it were solely about money, the members would have given anything.

if there's some angle that i'm neglecting i would love to hear. i've thought about this, thought about it some more, and then thought about it some more. then i gave up. spent down my credits, and finished up my emails.

curiously, the site is still up. what am i missing here?

Part of the no money for prizes thing came with members paying to enter contests (none of my 20 IDs, because of how often I was banned, ever paid a dime), and the site being ad free.

If the site is dormant, there is little to do in the way of maintaining it. Also, there is no more reason to not have ads, and I would assume that will start to see banners on the site if you return to it.

Members (those who log in frequently), don't represent a lot of unique traffic to the site.

Now that the site will simply be frequented by random people looking at pics (and, my assumption is that the actual unique traffic to the site will not dwindle significantly), there is a lot of money to be made in ad revenue, and little in the way of expenses to cut into what will be a pure profit stream for this guy for the rest of his life.

Has anyone considered making a site like worth1001.com? I'm sure all the members would come flocking.

yeah, i was thinking of redistributing my money and doing that. i've just been up all night watching stuff decline. one thing at a time. first chat, email, who knows what now....

you're explanation, though it makes me feel a lot worse, is actually really good. it makes sense.

sorry you got banned so much.

yeah, open invitation to anyone who writes code: i really wanna pay someone to make another worth. but jax claims that the original startup was ten million. i had one mil to throw at it but ten is frigging crazy. i don't have that.

thanks malcomn for explaining that though. really clever. never thought of that.

I cannot believe that it cost $10 MILLION DOLLARS to "start up" that site. That is BS.

In any case, though it's not exactly the same as W1K, there is Choppix ... and of course, we still have us, here!

Worth was a great site in its day. Let's remember it that way. Good people, good friends, great talent. The artists remain the artists they were and maybe they'll migrate over here. I expect a lot of the big guns will come here as I expect a lot of beginners and intermediate players will frequent the smaller, less shark filled tanks like choppix and a few others. I was amazed at how many chop sites there actually are. A fellow at w1k sent me a list of 20 that he is personally a member. But after a glance I don't see any that compare to FN or W1k. Whatever happens, it is bound to ramp up around here. I'm not ready to lock horns yet, still don't have PS working or the data transferred to the new HD which HoHouse was kind enough to give me an excellent deal on. Later....

Looks like Worth is down today due to some server issues. I saw server errors there this morning. Now I just get a blank page. I'm sure they will fix it shortly though.
