Hey Gang,
Just a note here on my recent disqualification of TWITS.
No hard feelings.
I was a we bit butt-hurt for about 30 seconds but still love the site and people here.
I Ďm not real clear on what precedence prompted making a rule where thumbnails of the original cannot be incorporated into the final. There are times when that approach works to forward the effect as in say, the artistís depicting his/herself painting within a painting. Itís clever albeit overused.
But rules are generally there for good reason and there are wiser people here than I, just none as good looking Bwhahahahahahahaha.
What made me sad about the disqualification was not so much being removed from the contest, (it was a given the piece was not really even intended as a contender in that format), but the fact that it was removed at all. It was there as a half-assed attempt to educate and inspire as a result of comments I have observed in the forums regarding referencing the source materials.
It was also there as a measure to inform the casual viewer of how much dang work we put into these things, though fell miserably short of achieving that.
In retrospect, the contest arena is not the place for such a piece, respective of the good intentions.
However, there should be a section of this site exclusively devoted to the education of the novice. Donít you think? Now donít bash me up too bad if one already exists, if it does I have not found it yet. I am but an egg here still. Anyway the idea is, set aside a page where step-by-step tutorials can be created by us, for the novice view. Maybe even do a video and post a video link to youtube if any of us want to be so ambitious as to create an instruction video. Iíd create one but as yaíll know I am working with dinosaur bones and pigmented dust practically. LOL However, once I get myself into the 21st century Iíll probably play with that idea. Weíre currently in process of creating an audio commercial for FN and if approved by whomever owns this site, we can issue it to those of you that would like to post it up on your myspace site or other audio friendly site, rules permitting. Does that sound cool? I apologize for not bouncing the idea off the powers that be if that is not wanted but for the life of me, I canít imagine why. So Iím running with it.
Now, running and maintaining this site has got to be a Godís chore and the suggestion of a new page full of complicated software and links, would make me cringe. But I think the advantages would be significant.
There you have it.
Be well and hit the lottery

Dear Hitspinner,
I was the one who disqualified your image, and I typed a quick email message explaining the reason. I am on vacation these days and my internet time is limited. I bring my apologies if my short message seemed like a beurocratic line written by robot

However, I did refer you to the FAQ section "What can not be used as an entry?"
http://www.freakingnews.com/faq.asp#14

Quote:
What cannot be used in an entry?
...
Entries that include a thumbnail of the original in their body."

I very well understand your good intentions of such composition, but the entry still had thumbnails. If you wanted to, you could have created a separate version of the entry with thumbnails and link to it under the entry without thumbnails. (just like people link to sources - you can host it in your FN media folder or on any image hosting sites).

As per suggestion you made - all excellent points. However, we do have tutorial section already. We also have special forums "Photoshop Techniques" and "Noob Corner" which are designed for training "n00bs".

I like your idea of audio commercial for FN - please email it to me ( admins freakingnews.com ) when it's ready and we'll see what we can do with it.

Extra thanks for the lottery wishes

You Disqalified it!!!!
Bloody nou breekt m'n Klomp!
Ah well,, 'tblijft toben. 't geeft niet. I still like ya. LOL
Anyway, my lousy attempt at Dutch humor aside, I went to the link and am still a little cloudy minded on why thumbnails aren't allowed. Is there a historical prescedent that prompted that ruling? I guess that rules out any ideas I might have had about creating a face from a few thousand of the same JPGs with only color varriance to form the 4 color image. Hhhaaha I saw that done once, gads that was a massive file. Frank had to edit it on 2 21" trinitron monitors and just about sucked all the memory out of his Mac. Hahhah but it was amusing and worked. That was Frank Savino RIP, a good friend and the first guy to turn me on to digital art. In the beginning, he was really amature, couldn't sketch his name in the physical art sense. But he took to that computer like a politician to a ball warmer. I gave him some pointers on art basics, mainly light and mechanics and the next thing you know the guy was knocking back more $$$ a year than I was! The guy was a natural in this medium.
Enough Trivia. I'm glad you like the audio idea. I think you'll dig what we have planned.
Vacation!!!
Curacao, Aruba, Bonairre? Great dive spots. I lived about 3-1/2 years cumulative down in the Nederland Antillies and all throughout the Caribbean. Time well spent and I intend to go back before long.
If I seemed a bit snippy to you in my email, pay it no mind. Hadn't had my coffee yet and that was the first thing I confronted in the AM Hahahaha . Ssorry if there was an edge to that mail.
And you know, I did try this:
"just like people link to sources - you can host it in your FN media folder or on any image hosting sites)." But could not get the link to take.
It's all beginner error, pay no mind. I'll figure it out.
Thanks a bunch,

Hey Tim, I have had things DQ'd as well. I assume there wasn't time to take the thumbnail off and resubmit your entry.

Did you know our beloved Newsy is Russian? He is on holiday in Eastern Europe at the moment.

I don't know if exotic delights such as scuba diving are available there. I should think topless sunbathing is though.

Why not break the rules just this once and do a contest with a Droste Effect contest and see what choppers can do with thumbnails or whatever else their little imaginations desire?

Russian, I thought he was Dutch even though he has a Rusian surname. LOL So much for asuming.
I've been to moscow, just about 6 days after the fall. Tense times, great people. Freakin governments! It was all BS you know. The Rusians didn't have a pot to ... in but they still gave us food from their tables, made us welcome and never asked for anything. We returned the grace in kind as well a made our hosts quite rich. We had about $10,000.00 of surplus funds that we managed to get into the country but not out. So we said screw it and divied up the 10K between the three ladies that helped us so much. The exchange rate back then was like giving them the equivalent of a house! Hhhahahahah To us it was pocket change but to those wonderful ladies it was the lotto. I have never had another human being fall to their knees and hug me in tears like that. I cried too, dunno why, just did. Meaningful moments in life, damn I love em.
Nope I did not have time to cut out the thumbnail bits. I was up all night and went to sleep. The mail came during that period and the contest closed. It's no great loss, just ticked me momentarilly. That little project was expendable.
Bare ... ed women, huh... I Don't even want the temptation, put those away and keep changing the tire I told her LOL
Got to sleep, did another all nighter on another entry. I still can't figue out how to put the source art from the media file folder in there with the submission.

Hi Tim, no, you speak Dutch and I speak like three of four sentences Hahhaha. I spent some time down in the Netherland Antillies and picked up a wee tiny bit but mostly forgotten. Out of sight, out of mind sort of thing. It's a cool language though it sort of sounds like ... ed off Orks in The Lord Of the Rings when you first hear it sopoken. Yeah, I am sure.
It's my bad, I read the rules but they apparently didn't stick.
A disqualification, is nothing really, I mean nothing is lost. It's not like you trained all year for an Olympic event or ya have a lot of $$$ riding on the contest. It's a fun little contest, that's all.

a contest with a Droste Effect contest

Just a little wordplay on droste effect. With the emphasis on the word 'word'.

I would also suggest it as an apprentice contest to give them a chance to get a little practice in before the big guns step in and steal the show. Run a full contest at a later date after the apprentices have a chance to polish their act.

Indeed. I am amazed at people that can read and write in different languages fluently. Just amazed.I am one of those that can't even master his own native language. Hah. It's trouble with Grammar, mainly. But I have tried to learn German, Dutch and Spanish however always wind up saying something convoluted and embarasing like, "Hello, Tim name is, you pleased to meat. You kind a face have," or some pervertet twist of grammar and use like that.
So your Belgian, eh? The land of smoooooth talking, dreamy eyed studs with happy hormones! LOL I lost a gilfriend to a visiting Belgian once and so did my best friend almost a year to the day. We had a few beers and laughed about it finally deciding that we would get legislation passed that would mandate all Belgian males to have iron undershorts welded to them before entering the country. Was out-voted by the ladies at the pub, Tisk tisk hehe
Well, I have jabbered enough, you have a fine day, Tim.

Make sure the picture you want to upload is under 200kb. Go to your media folder, upload your picture. Then check the box next to it, click on the copy URL, when it asks you to allow access to clipboard say yes.

Go the competition upload page. Upload your image, fill in description and title.

In the comment box do ctrl V The bit saying web media etc will appear.

You will need to format this as follows. I have put spaces in to stop it appearing as sources on it's own.

[ URL = " web media etc " ] source [ / URL ]

Remove the spaces and it should work.
