Out of Bounds

I need help.

Although I know that I will be too late for the Out of Bounds Competition, I would like to finish this - but I don't know where to go now. This is still in layers at the moment. (The white area is transparent.)What should I do next?

Thanks in anticipation.

Sorry, I don't know how to put in the link correctly here.

This is the direct link with inverted commas around it

SOME HOURS LATER:
I've had a go at it and posted it in the comp. as Pelicans on Watch.

Any constructive criticisms/comments would be gratefully received.

Some sort of chop

Hmmmm maybe I will try this? Okay that worked. You could submit it as-is but it's not actually an out of bounds chop.

Out of bounds is taking an element inside an image and animating it like it is leaving where it would normally be found permanently... but for some freak act of nature or magic that moved it. I think that is a pretty good definition as I understand it. Maybe some others will jump in and expand it.

As for your chop, ask yourself the right question. What image would these pelicans be found in a permanent state and where are they leaving to? Expanding into photoshop 201 you could have them coming through a mirror or some reflection. But stick with simple for now. Little steps. FreakingNews isn't going anywhere and there will be more of these type contests. I almost promise LOL Hope this helps

Thanks, Hitspinner.

I thought about using a National Geographic cover for them to come out of, but didn't know whether that was allowed.

Great idea. Nat Geo photography is generally off limits and copyright but I don't think the cover is a problem unless you are using it in some defamatory way, which you wont. Same with Time, Newsweek, NY Times.... We use such pubs all the time and nobody has a hissy fit. I think Disney, Norman Rockwell are the two sue happy types. Deviant Art has a whole bunch of prima donnas that get all owie if you chop their stuff so I stick to creative commons and copyright free posters and wallpapers. Plus I shoot a lot of my own sources now that I am back to chopping. HoHouse is the guy to talk to. He's plugged into the free and where to find it sites.

Thanks again HS.

I have posted a chop using the Nat Geo covers. What do you think?

I'm still learning at this and have only Gimp, so don't know how to do some of the things in the OOB lesson.

I have a friend who takes really good photographs and posts them on Flickr and she has kindly given me permission to use any of her photos.

I saw that you did the Nat Geo cover theme and it looks pretty darn good. I see a lot of promise. You have a newness that might just work out for you. We will watch and see.

Gimp- not familiar but PhotoImpressions, Photo Impact, Correl, PS they all get it done. Some better and easier than others. The program doesn't make the chopper but they do make a difference.

Nearly all programs have the same basic editing controls and your ability to use those basics is critical. The filters and FX are just cherries on top and you can expand into those after you master the prime steps. Its good your friend lets you use her stuff.

Minis OOB's mainly come out of squares, ie picture frames.

Not sure what you can do with GIMP, but it works for you now.

Coral photoimpact is what I use, there new program Coral PaintShop is good. under $100. If you call I think they can get PhotoImpact.

Google It

When you search on google add wiki on the end to get free pics, or creative commons.
