Worth huh? I dropped in a chop a few days ago and it only scored a 5. By no standards anywhere on the planet do I chop a 5, ever, unless I'm in the middle of a stroke or something. Ha! I had 20 minute doodles smoke me over there LOL. MSGnt Bob was kind enough to sponsor the chop. (something I forgot about or I may not have entered). My philosophy is, I am a professional, visual entertainer. You pay me, I don't pay you for the right to entertain your peeps. FN has the right formula. It doesn't take money from aspiring artists that never had a chance but it does pay for excellence. The pay ain't a lot, granted, but it is a valliant effort in the right direction. I tip my hat on that one point for sure.
So, I just don't get the Worth of Worth yet. Funkster has done well there, so I give it the benifit of a look over on that merit alone. But not sure I could make that same sort of connection. For one thing, I'm a certifiable man-meat and don't take any crap and I may have a total missread but it seems like they walk on eggshells over there. I may be a bit too abrasive. Anyway, that's my unsolicited drivel on worth, Chris/peg
I may change my mind tomorrow

I think W1K is a well-rounded, professional, generous place to play. Naturally they'll get a mass of student work at times, which also ends up skewing the voting, but on the whole, I never feel I have to couch any voting. I vote the truth of how I feel about a chop and my karma is not one, as it is here.

Sure they pay for wins here ... and I agree, 100%, any amount is a fabulous thing. They also do not charge to play here, which I appreciate.

But the gates to wins are barred, IMO. Otherwise, the same people would not win over and over again. Their chops are not so much better, sometimes not better at all, sometimes boring as anything. But they win!

I can spend (and do) hours on a chop, worrying every detail -- and it ranks towards the bottom, under chops that could have been completed in 15 minutes tops. Of course, it's not the time spent, but how the time was spent, but these chops look like 15 minutes, is my point.

I think there are more uneducated voters here -- part of the culture here, not going to change. So you take the good with the not as good and you party or you put your hat on your head and walk.

It's not about the money; paying or receiving.
It's about showing off. Can do that in both places.

THERE I learn. Looking at those chops, amazing work a lot of the time, my own work improves. They have a mentoring program, I went through it and benefitted tremendously. I urge choppers here to give it a go, if you have the right mentality. If you can accept advice and help.

My 2 cents.

Worth pay winners in credits, which can be used for future entries. I think it is a good place to exercise your chopping skills or learn new ones. There is an active forum and a wealth of tutorials in A to Z form.

I know full well I don't have a cat in hades chance of winning here. That doesn't mean I won't enter anything. Some contests are more interesting than others too. The frequent winners here have hit on a formula that pleases the voters.

There is nothing wrong with their work. It does tend to be the same old thing rehashed over and over. There are, of course notable exceptions. When those illustrious choppers choose to pay a call they win hands down.

Well, shut my mouth -- I came in second today! Very happy. I'm wondering if my chop was helped by finally solving my sizing issue. I was "saving for web" at the highest quality, which made the chops smaller than they needed to be. Once I figured that out, I saved at 80% and my chop was much larger for all its 350kb. Gonna continue to make 'em larger, see if there's a better voting history in store for me ...

You don't have to pay. The only reason to pay is if you want to be awarded tokens for your win.

If you don't care (since they are otherwise worthless), you needn't pay the entry fee nor be sponsored. Your entry will still be voted upon and ranked according to those votes.

Thanks Malcomxy. I'm discovering that I listened to a lot of BS about Worth that gave me a false impression.
I'm sensitive on the subject of artists being charged to perform. Being a musician as well as a visual artist I have encountered club owners that make a band buy the nights ticket total and be responsible for filling the house and selling out. Any tickets not sold, the band eats the loss. Zero risk for the club owners. Zero demand on them to be responsible for their end of promotion. This is common exploitation in hollywood where the bands are lined up, chomping at the bit just to play a venue where they can be heard. So, I generally make a pretty big sceene when I see that crap and do my best to make the club owners feel like the low life scum that they are. Sometimes I do need to read the fine print and directions LOL

The thing that is different about Worth1k is that they have so many types of contests, Effects (photoshop) illustration, photography, writing, illichop. They also clearly separate manga, caricature, realism, fantasy and others, all within the photoshop contests. Then there is multimedia and minecraft. There are so many things to choose from.
For an artist, the illustration contests are wonderful. They have a longer time frame too.
Freaking News specialises in topical news and does it very well. It is not fair to make direct comparisons with Worth1k which is a horse of a different colour.
They also have a thing called Aviary and the Rookery which I don't really understand.
Technical merit is more important there than humour too.

yeah, the placing entries are usually outstanding, pro quality work.

Speaking of which, wish me luck. I'm beginning my bachelor's degree for graphic design on April 8th. Maybe I'll learn a little somethin'

Are you going to enter something on Worth, you can go in the beginners until you win 4 trophies. Good place to hone your chopping skills.
I am in the advanced group now which makes it a lot harder. So far I have a silver and gold in the advanced contests.

I'm not keen on Worth. They have a lot of excellent chops, and some amazing artists. But it seems like a lot of the entries are still about quantity as opposed to quality. IMO, entering 20 times with mediocre chops, does not increase the chances of winning. But it's not just that. It's so cold & impersonal there. It's like, why have a user name?....you're just another number.

I hadn't noticed as many multiple entries on Worth as I have on FN. They are quite friendly if you go in the forum, on the few occasions I have been in. The advanced contests are harder and the competition is fierce.
I have brought a couple of people across to FN already lol!
I've just lost 33 karma points on the double contest. grrrr!
That does annoy me.
I don't enter that many contests on Worth, some are too vague for me. The ape one looks interesting though.
I did think about the marricide one and a man trap or a bomb but didn't bother. I couldn't think of anything sick or cruel enough.
I collected lots of images but when it came down to doing a chop I didn't feel like it.
