Losing Karma

I seem to be losing Karma rather quickly. It seems realism and quality are out of fashion now. I am not going to single out examples, but I do believe there are others in the same situation.

You only lost 12 points of karma in the last contest - this is a small normal variation, easily recoverable in the next contest. We all lose karma now and then, but recover in the next contests

There is some truth to this. I love the goofy, self-referencing FN chops, but is the site's mission to parody the News, to show off your Photoshop skillz, or to make a bunch of inside jokes the internet doesn't get?

Back in my meme-seeding origins as a Something Awful goon, the contests were thread-based, and people were even encouraged to re-chop each others' images entries. Then, on every Photoshop Friday and Comedy Goldmine Tuesday, the forum mods would post the best/worst images from the thread.

by the way, I stopped chopping over at SA because the content was too offensive too often, and I much more enjoyed the Daily Show type of news parody that FN offered.

The ONLY reason I throw this out there is that Freaking News seems poised to go the next level... But, encouraging faster and funnier chops is crucial.

by the way, this is not a crack at anyone cranking out PS masterpieces - I love 'em too. Especially those who have honed their warps into their own signature caricature styles.

The fashion is definitely for chops with a lot of contest, fantasy and caricature, or doll like proportions.
Most of them are heavily American biased and don't always make sense to foreigners like me. Cartoon type chops are in favour too.
I am sure the winds of change will blow before long and another type of chop will be in fashion.
I love to see parody and funny chops. Realism is great too, especially when it looks so believable it goes viral.

I think with the advent of the freak show contests, where "anything goes", there began a bit of internal chopping....like of members etc.... (which had been pretty much restricted to the forums prior to that)

I don't think there's anything wrong with that (in moderation, lol) ya know, the odd tribute chop here and there in the freak show, as long as you have the permission of the person you are chopping (which was how it worked when we chopped people in the forums....the initial FN gallery of members pics was set up for the forums chops....)

When they start to seep into the other contests however, yeh, it doesn't mean much to the visitors to the site, and some chops would get a lot more views and get picked up and referenced by other sites etc if they included celebs and politicians that are known or in the news at the time.

Helps the site get more visitors, helps their own chops get more views...yada yada yada....

As for "fast and funny" chops.....I guess the standard has lifted a bit in that just a head swap doesn't cut it much here anymore.....

I do still vote highly on good realistic chops (I've seen a few more of them creeping back lately) because they do have a wide appeal....the "could that be real" factor....and it was that sort of thing that drew me towards FN in the first place

I think they can be "devalued" at times....I've actually seen people who do the more "arty" types of chop struggle at the realistic ones....just because they "look simple", doesn't mean they are....getting the right sources, lighting, shadows etc etc perfect to make something look real can be tricky! (and can't be hidden behind PS effects or Topaz plugins....lol)

That's my personal view though.....

Realism is the hardest quality to recreate, IMO.

Personally, I've only been glancing in lately because I got sick and tired of the few friends who use each others pictures to make chops that no one else gets. Or if we do it's because we've seen them used over and over. I thought there was a rule against using the same source multiple times, but perhaps that is another site.

I'd like to see Newsy farm the headlines and give us MORE TOPICAL CHALLENGES!

I'd visit way more often if there were hourly/daily contests ripped from the headlines.

You'd then only give the monetary prizes to the "Week in Review" winners culled from the past week's worth of headline chops.

I think the folks that are obviously putting some very hard and creative effort into their submissions may actually be discouraging other humorists from wasting their time competing.
Although, I do believe the more traditional chopping contests would still have a place here.

If this were more of a Worth1000 kind of site, I could understand the long contest windows, but it's a News-driven real-time comedy site, at least I though it was.

Vlad, I'd honestly bet you could find recurring credits on the Daily Show and the Colbert Report (and other mass-viewer media outlets worldwide) if it were! You have the defacto website name for it, after all!

Yeah...I came back and tried once again, and my chop in the jumping horse contest, given what else was entered, was BY FAR the best, and I got something like 14th place.

I give up again.

(and some dude gave me a 10 on another chop, and while it was simple, it was a good concept, and it was flawlessly executed...he lost 10 points of karma for that vote, because my entry came in last place, which was 10th, by the way)

Being one of the guilty unpure, lol, the natural evolution for me is to constantly push my limitations. Generally, I don't like my sundae without the bonus cherry on top and so it is with chops. I totally get the purist viewpoint and love the realistic chops that make you wonder if it is real or photoshopped. I think the supplied picture contests offers excellent venue to flex the purist muscle. I did one recently of the motorcycle racer (wheelie) that looked like he very well could have been pushed out of the back of an airplane. Some guy thought it was crap. I didn't have to defend the chop, the pure, basic no frills choppage was on the money and you guys voted it well-high. It would be good to have a pure chopping contest with well defined parameters, news driven, and high points for the tromp l'oeil effect.

I think the time windows are about right, hardly anybody would have the time to do faster chops.

The "in joke" chops can be annoying for people who don't know what they are about. It has not affected their placing in contests though, so they must be popular.

The trouble with traditional contests, like the recent women contest, is that choppers who have been longing for a chance to show off their skills, get tempted to flood the contest with lots of entries.

I counted 20 from one chopper and 11 from another. Others did more than one. In a contest with a total of 93 entries, this not only results in inferior quality chops, but makes it hard to vote fairly. Maybe it is just me, but it makes my head spin.

There were some decent chops losing out to less competent chops in my opinion. Voting fairly on 93 chops is difficult for the less experienced voters. Obvious errors get overlooked, while better chops don't get the marks they deserve.

The Freaking News voting system is better because you can go back and change it, which you cannot do on Worth. You also get the chance to review and edit mistakes if they have been pointed out. Which you cannot do on Worth.

Worth restricts the numbers on contests that are likely to be heavily subscribed. About 7, if memory serves me correctly.
I like both sites, although I am finding it difficult to produce anything with a chance of winning on here.

Difficult yes. But you are an excellent chopper with all the skills you need to win. Personally, I know if I don't pull a rabbit out of my ass every single time, it will be left behind. So, it is the excellence that you other folks have that pushes me to dig for those rabbits and... I just realized my metaphore was freakin gross. But you get me, I'm sure.

Don't feel bad Azure....I'm American & I don't get it either. I'm down to 1 karma point. I guess honest voting has fallen out of fashion as well. Possibly because I vote on sharpness, clarity, shadowing/lighting. I guess those aren't needed in the new style of chopping.
I pop in to check the forum, look at the entries, but I don't vote anymore, and I stopped entering. Realism is dead I fear.

Hi JannaR.
Your karma should be pretty easy to build now.
If you use 7 as the median point your vote can vary 2 points to the right or the left of that number before the karma System administers a hit. Trouble is when too many people like yourself decide that they will not vote the karma system becomes well lets say......narrow minded.
Actually it doesn't have a mind at all and has never seen a realism chop in it's life. It needs number input every time to reflect your preferences.
I've seen some big changes this week in the contest. The cumulative power of the common voter like you and I has in some cases quadrupled......sounds good but we need more if we ever expect the karma system to work smoothly.
We need you to Vote...and to tell a friend.

Thank you for your kind words Tim, however the Chimera chop came 15th out of 34 so it appears others did not share your opinion.

I have just looked at the Michael Caine contest and was shocked at the poor quality of many entries. Dreadful face swaps for a start.

Poor lighting, necks not fitting into collars, etc. I will vote but am probably risking karma loss.

I'm aware of how the voting karma works, I've been a member since 2004. But what I am commenting on, is the fact that we,Azure & I, are voting on what we know to be true & fair according to the voting guidelines. But when other, newer, people are amazed by the meme, cartoonish & bobble-head chops....they all vote high. Leaving our votes looking as though we're lowballing the scores. But we're not. We are following the guidelines. If an entry does not warrant high scores, I am not going to start voting 7's, 8's & 9's just to boost my karma.
