Is it just me???

Crappy day and I'm home waiting for plaster to dry, so I'm going on a small rant.
I've been noticing many chops with really bad or non existent lighting, no contrast, wrong shadows, bad masking, and a general lack of overall Ambiance/Drama.
There have been chops that I would give an 8 or 9, but I find myself lowering that score because of this.

Is it no one is noticing, or is it no one cares?

I've been thinking about making comments to try to help the hidden entrant, but I fear that my comments would be taken as "destructive" not "instructive" criticism, so I do not do it, people seem to take criticism as a way to persuade others to vote lower, I know this is true because I have been guilty of that as well.

I don't know what the answer might be, I'd like to hear some opinions.

I could have a lot more to say on these subjects, but enough for now. Thanks.

A. There's lighting, and there's over-lighting. If you're talking about matching stuff, yeah...people mess that up all the time.

B. When I started here, I pretty much only bothered to leave a comment if the comment was some sort of (what I thought was) helpful criticism. But, I think I was, as I tend to be, way too blunt, so Newsy told me to cut it the heck out. I don't leave many comments, if any, anymore.

C. I like it when people try to help me improve my skills...not so much when they give me their lame, generic, "creative" ideas for how I can really spruce the pic up ("you should have put a flower there..." "where? up yer ss?")

I'm stupid and stuff, though, so don't listen to me.

I will take this hint and work on my lighting etc.. My chops could use some work but I have a very short attention span and when Im done, I AM DONE. lol

I tried to take your advice once vicspa and look something over and try to improve and I sat at my computer with the brain fart the size of texas. I could never be a true artist because I lack the commitment. I chop to have fun.

As for comments I leave, I will comment someone if their chop makes me laugh or if it is pretty. Other than that it is to tell people how much I hate them as you well know.

Veroni, when you are done, you are done, with me, I get way too anal and pick at my entry too much, I'm trying to make it perfect, but only for myself, cause I darn well know no one else will GAS (give a s--t).

Malcolm, I like the idea of "helpful criticism", but again that could be taken wrong, and as far as "put a flower there", yeah you're right, (up your a--)

Looking at an entry in a contest, where the lighting on the central figure is from one side, the background is from another side the objects yet another side, shadows all over the place, it can be easily fixed, but it makes me want to tear my hair out of my head when someone comments how great this entry is and wants to give it a 10++++++++
I attribute it to people having a lack of knowledge on how light and shadows behave, and to a lack of knowledge of Photoshop, and I should be more tolerant, but it goes against all the art training I had, and my lack of patience in this area.

OK plaster's dry, time to give it another coat. Later guys.

Yes Vicspa, I do notice these things. Often I have seen chops with obvious faults beating flawless chops.

They probably get placed higher because they are funnier. Subject matter does seem to be a major factor to voters.

I pay attention to lighting etc.

My pet peeves are using "outdoor sunlit faces" and putting them onto bodies in "indoor chops" (or vice versa), shadows that make added elements look "flat" and pasted on due to not paying attention to the "distance" an added element should be at in comparison to things behind them etc etc.

I also pay attention to contrast and resolution differences between added elements, and whether there is a focal point to a chop or whether you get sort of "lost" amongst lots of "stuff" (so basically composition issues)

I usually don't say much on chops these days, but I do vote on what I "see" in relation to the above, because these are the basics.

I'm sure you are right Christine, but I don't know what's so funny about putting Obama's face on Everything, and Everytime.

macwithfries, I agree with you on the outdoors sunlit faces/indoors, totally out of place.

Thanks for chiming in.

I agree entirely with you about the overuse of Obama and Romney. I have stopped entering for a while because there is no point while the election is going on. Adding those two seems to be a necessity now.

To be honest it is getting rather boring for me personally. I daresay people outside Great Britain would be bored with our elections. Roll on Hallowe'en.
