"I've checked back over my last load of entries and there seems to be a single nameless member who's had a fixation for giving me a 3 vote. I sure hope Newsy knows who he/she is, and do me a great favour... Strangle the bar steward! LOL!

Let a Richard be a Richard* (it's all they know how to be.)

*nickname implied

Beware fighters of crime, lest ye become criminals thyself. (I have no idea who said or if it is even attributed to anyone, but I know that it should be on every cop's sun visor on every car they drive...thought it might work here as well...I know it was a joke, but I know you're a bit p!ssed about the deal as well. You just gotta fart it off and go from there...)

(This might work...might not...)

(OK...it didn't. If someone fixes this, could you let me know what the BB code for video is here...I know there are a few and I don't want to try all of them...)

I believe there may be a certain someone with some faux accounts.
If you check the last apprentice contest, almost everyone got at least 3 very low votes. Yet there was also someone with an unusual number of 10's. Maybe I'm imagining things. I wish there were a way to prove it. Just my observation, I hope I'm wrong.

There is a way to prove it. Those with the ability to discern IP Addresses can check those addresses against the HTTP Blacklist (and other quickly available proxy lists on the interwebz) to see if they are proxies, and if they all are, getting to the users' real IP Addresses is a simple matter (assuming, if this is real, the offending parties even bothered to use proxies)

It's more a matter of if there is a will to find out or not. This is why everyone needs to adopt an uncaring attitude about it all as I have. It really makes the issue much less noticeable or bothersome.

But someone with faux accounts who is voting in such a way would have a karma of 1. So voting 10 times only gives them 10 pts. And they only drag down everyone else by a 3 -- taking away 3 or 4 pts. Right?

Depends on exactly how Karma is calculated here and if the mods spot check the occasional high riser or low dropper.

At W1K, I can vote in such a way as to be almost the exact opposite of every other voter, but in a proportional way such that my voting, while crazy, would still yield me a quick rise to the top level Karma...but, that's because they calculate deviation as a total, while I think deviations here are on a per entry basis (which is better and worse, but mostly better...certainly difficult to game the system when it's set up like that, but it's also difficult to give something you like a high score if you think others might give it a low score)

***by the way - I've never done, nor will I ever do, what I described above. I just reviewed the karma system and figured out how to be a crazy voter and still hit the top karma level. If I saw anyone doing that, I wouldn't say anything, but I would likely virtually vomit all over them, because anyone who cares about this stuff that much is kinda sick.

No, most people with a karma of 1 actually don't have any karma at all (the system just doesn't show zero's) so no, there is no impact what so ever to a contest from a voter with 1 karma.

So they are basically wasting their time employing such tactics.....

D'oh! Are you sure? Because try though I might, I barely make a blip in my karma rating, sometimes as high as 17, but mostly a 1. Do you mean I don't need to vote? Because if all that time I'm spending looking at entries and giving it my honest opinion amounts to NOTHING, then why would I bother?

Really? Really? A zero karma? GFC.

It used to be like this years ago before we tweaked it. But now, the minimal karma is 1.

Has anyone ever considered moving to a half vote/half impartial judging panel, or something like that?

I ain't sayin' it's what should be done. I'm just askin' if it, or anything like it, was ever considered and if it was, why it was dismissed.

I don't care. I'm just curious about the reasoning process.

Um, that would take some years of immersion in a culture that no longer exists in a place that is nothing like it was when that video was made.

Basically, it's the stink eye...the face one gives something when they disapprove.

That's the Reader's Digest version. If you invent time travel, we'll immerse you in early 90s hip hop culture so that you can understand the more subtle underpinnings of that video.

OK...the contest is over now, so zoiks...

1st of all, someone complimented me (and I would guess, based their vote somewhat on this) on one of my entries because of how artfully I had used the color red...EXCEPT it's an old commie poster, so the red was just there...that's what they did - they used red, white and black, because that's what stands out the most to the human eye.

And, the one I did which did almost the best was about the simplest (simplex?) thing ever. It was funny as hell, don't get me wrong, but it was also rife with mistakes. I just can't figure you crazy kids out...it's mostly why I don't pay attention, but it was hard not to notice the comment or final tally of the two posters in question.

Also, are none of you old fogies or youngins fans of The Wu? Pity...really, a shame...they rule.

Though, here is how I know the voting here is way more decent than other sites...

yeah, there's the person who votes everyone a 1. They are a douche, and you just kind of have to ignore them, because not ignoring them is an exercise in futility as they are going to do what they are going to do, regardless.

BUT...

I had an entry where 99.9% of the scoring was in a single numerical value (and that value was a 6, which was a perfectly fair for this entry).

At "other sites" the distribution is all over the place. Granted, this was an extreme, but I rarely have significant points outside of a 3-4 number range here. Anyway, for those who think it's an issue, it could be a New Jersey of a lot worse (and, other places, it is...)
