Portraiture prize winner

In the light of recent discussions of "art" people might be interested in the 2012 winner (announced 45 minutes ago) of the prestigious Australian Archibald Prize for portraiture. Up to a few years ago this prize always went to very safe "traditional" portraits.

Archibald Prize 2012

(1. I don't know how to make this a "hot" link. 2. Neither do I know whether this is the correct tag.)

Made it a hot linky for you.

That is an interesting choice of winner.

Wikipedia's definition of what a "portrait is":

A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant.

I like the winning entry, its kinda cool It is a representation of a person I guess....so in that way it's a "portrait" but it is "outside the box".

The only thing that worries me a lil is that when things become too outside the box, then anything could be classified as a portrait yes? So the rules start to fade away....

I can understand that the picture captures the personality of the painter. Personally, I rather like it as a painting, though it is definitely not a portrait in the traditional sense.
