Bottom line (for me), the new guy, is that there are to many gray areas here.

From what I gather there are those who are legends, and do not need critique, and padawan learners who will not understand or become upset.

I spent over an hour on the "Animal" contest the other day making paragraph comments. After reading the user "Wiz" comment what I took away was that if the person asks then give. Other than that just say, "nice" even if it isn't.

I will not ruffle any feathers and keep it nice-nice.

After all there's probably other places on the internet where it swings the other way and people who don't have formal training are talking out of their, A*s. So in that respect I can understand how things can get out of control and best practice is to play it safe.

You worry too much Dunce, we are not that delicate. I will comment on all but the very obvious novices if there is something I want to say. Then, if I could think of something that could help I would say something to them.

If you want straight sometimes brutally honest critiques go to Worth1000. They are about chopping, not news parody, which is what FN does so well. Many Worth1000 members chop here as well.

I have entered a few there myself. The competition is very tough but in a different way to FN. If you enjoy criticsing that is the place to go.

OK, I guess being the new guy I was trying too hard to figure the community out.

And I'm not looking for intensive critique or to give it. I'm simply saying I see more value in a comment like, "Very nice! The whos-it could be a little sharper, but great job over all!" versus, "LOL", or "I like it." while those have merit for being a comment, they are lacking in any effort at all. in my humble opinion.

Again, I am over complicating this, now I am explaining my way out and bowing as I slowly back toward the door.

Nothing wrong with giving advice, one of my chops in the women contest has had comments which I have acted upon. Not too sure if it is any better. It is not great, but not too bad either.

I notice a lot of entries have been worked on since yesterday. There is only one on there now that I don't feel should be there.

Yesterday I spent hours on a chop, then when saving it I clicked the wrong but and couldn't open it again.

I knuckled down and did it all again but it took less time. I think the original was better so far as skin tone went.

If you see something that needs adjusting,by all means say so, but nicely, offering appropriate advice.
