Colorization advice...

Hi guys!

I'm a n00b, and was trying to do one of those colorizing tricks with a black & white image... Then I read Keb's tutorial "Colorization Made Easy". And it's great, but he uses this Gradient Maps Layers. Until now I was trying to get the same effect by using Color Balance Layers.

I guess the question is: What is the difference? can I achieve the same? which will look more realistc? (if done right)

Do you have experience with this? Any advice?

Thanx a lot...

I could be totally wrong, I'll defer to Keb for the real answer, but it would seem to me that using gradient maps would keep the midtones from getting too saturated.

To answer your question, it won't look any more realistic (if done right). You are overlaying color on a black & white image. For me, it is easier to pick (Gradient Map Layer) the colors I want than sliding bars (Color Balance Layer) to get my colors. After you create the layer you can still change the layer style and Opacity to produce the effect you are looking for. This is true in both methods. I said in the tutorial that there is more than one way to colorize. The gradient map layer method is one way I learned to colorize and I use it. My best advice to you is to use the method that gives you the results you are looking for.
