Question about Sprial/Rule of 3

Power Retouche has a PS plugin that allows you to instantly place a variety of "Golden Spiral" and "Rule of Three" guides atop your canvas.

Golden Section

Do any of you guys know of an alternative means to achieve this effect. An action, perhaps?

It seems handy but I'm not sure I want to purchase another plugin just yet, especially if I don't have to.

The golden rules a basic things taught at Art School. If you print off a copy of the page you showed us, you can copy the proportions yourself. Just get a transparent layer and draw them.
You probably wouldn't buy a plug in for perspective, so why spend money on something you can learn for yourself? I would look them up on the internet personally.

It's definitely a concept I'm learning, I guess.
But your saying it's just a pattern used to train you?
Not as a day-to-day guide, right?

Artists often use templates, squares of card with a cut out in the middle and black cotton stretched across to create equal squares. this is used as a viewfinder to help with composition.

Yes, it is a pattern you cab learn yourself, after a while it becomes instinctive.
