Tattoos on Butts, Shadows, Water, Glass, and everything else see through ish.

alright i noticed that nobody does this but me. i don't know, maybe i'm really hardcore. maybe people don't think about shading as much. i've got a real bon&^ for light.
so, i am not being condescending bc, honestly it took me a month to notice this myself.
BLENDING OPTION]BLEND IF.
THE most important thing ever. For shadows and water and glass and just everything.
Here's an animated tutorial that i made, it's about putting tattoos on a butt, but it can be used for all manner of stuff.
I want to enhance just one life with it.
I really WANT to help make great artists. Please bear with it, i made the animation super slow for slow readers like me. It's set at five seconds, so if, after five seconds it doesn't move, then blame tumblr. They aren't that great with it. Sorry if it's dumbed down, and if you still don't get it, i take personal emails.

crap, i just realized that might be slightly objectionable material. i forget we're not all adults on the internet.
so, warning, to younger ones or moderators,
sorry.
it's just a lot of technical blahblah and one unclothen behind.
i won't be upset if i get flagged. i just wanted to help.

I entered this in a contest here in 2007. If I were to do it now, I would probably fade it a bit more. I had Photoshop 7 then.
Just thought you might find it funny.

Moya is right about the shadows. I have seen a few entries with floating people, animals and objects.

yeah, the girl with the innertube, that's good work. you liquified and made some of the underlying attributes shine through. it's good. there's one patch were it's a little solid, right at the dragon's head, but it still is quite good. i hope you did well in the contest.
i'm assuming you used the "blend if" feature.
i know that most people will say "how's it different than opacity?" and the truth is that it's the same concept, but it doesn't go globally like opacity. it only brings out desired amounts of the underlying darkness and lightness. i use it so many times a day, that i feel like that's all that i do.
and the only reason that i'm pushing this on everybody else is that i've seen a lot of otherwise perfect entries that are missing a shadow or maybe the shadow is just solid.
i see the potential of these entries and i think, "wow, it's such a simple thing to do. and it makes such a difference."
i think i'm going to whip up another animated tutorial all about shading bc it seems to be overlooked quite a bit.
when i have it finished, i'll post it up.
and then once everybody's got it down, then i probably won't win as much, but it'd be worth it.

I did this quickly, but I used "multiply" blend mode at 60% opacity, and I can't tell a difference between this and your technique.

Am I missing something?

(I use Corel, but I'm pretty sure Adobe uses the same terms for this blend mode)

well, the tutorial i made isn't altogether for tatoos. it's for anything with a shine underneath.
let's say you put that tatoo and her arm where the shiny bits are? guess what, it would be hard to get it to look right. yours is okay bc there's really no contour underneath. it's all about what's underneath but i like your work.
it's a good job.

try my method with a long shadow at sunset over grass, and you'll see that allowing the glare to shine through makes a much more recognizable shadow.
i don't know if this helps but i LOVE that people are making stuff just cause of some dumb thing that i wrote.
at my last website, i was the guy who sat in the corner with the pointy cap.
God, please don't put me back there.!!!
but i like both of these pieces. Love them.

That took like 2 seconds. I'm kind of a shortest distance between 2 points kind of guy...

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for that tutorial,I have been trying to figure out where that was for awhile now lol,I knew there was something that made the specular parts of the skin shine through to make a tattoo look better

I think I probably used distort and fade on the picture above. Now I would probably use warp and fade.
