| | Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom visited the
USA for the
first time in fifty years. He visit started this Friday with
Jamestown, Virginia - the very first permanent English settlement.
This visit falls on two anniversaries - four hundred years of the
foundation of Jamestown settlement and fifty years since queens last
visit of this place. The Queen was greeted by the army guards who have
fired cannon shots in her honor from the replica of the three ships in
which the first English settlers came. Original site of the fort was
partially absorbed by the river on last Queen's visit, but this time it
was excavated from the river, restored and turned into a museum.
Elizabeth II visited it and saw the relics and artifacts of four
hundred years ago - iron knives, chess pieces, guns and even claws of
the crabs which the first settlers ate.
Upon arrival she was greeted the the governor of Virginia and Vice
President Dick Cheney, who said that it is an honor to receive a Queen
half a century later on the 400th anniversary of Jamestown Fort.
Cheney added that since her last visit the cultural and economic
relationship between the USA and Great Britain grew even stronger, and
once again, like in World War II, the two countries joined the
coalition forces to fight the war against terror and put the troops in
Iraq.
After spending the first half of the day at the Fort, the Queen
visited Virginia Tech university where she spoke about the connection
between the British and Americans and expressed her condolences to the
families of the victims and wounded students.
Elizabeth II will stay in the United states for a week, and plans to
visit Washington D.C. and Kentucky Derby among other places. |
