Contest Directions: An experiment to reduce the mosquito population in Brazil through the release of half a million genetically modified OX513A mosquitoes has failed miserably and may have even created a genetic hybrid super species. The mosquitoes were supposed to contain a dominant lethal gene that would render the first generation of future offspring infertile (while also marking them fluorescent green). The claim was that genes from the released strain would not get into the general population because offspring would die, but the prediction was wrong, very wrong. Anywhere from 10 to 60 percent of the mosquitoes analyzed featured genomes tainted by OX513A. Some genetically-modified mosquitoes even showed signs of “hybrid vigor” in which the artificially-introduced genetic diversity actually made the mosquitoes bigger, stronger and more resilient, with increased resistance to insecticides. Many thanks to Registered for the themepost.
Photoshop genetically mutated insects any way you like. Some examples are: photo hoaxes of mutated insects, human insects, mutated insects in paintings, etc. For more on the contest story Click Here.
